Mental Health First Aid classes resume

Mental Health First Aid classes will resume at the Verde Valley Guidance Clinic, with the next class scheduled for Friday, January 27th and Friday, February 3rd. Hours for both days will be 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The classes are free and are based on an international program designed to help individuals, first responders, family members and others understand mental illness and how to help persons suffering from various disorders. In Arizona alone, over 1,000 people have become Mental Health First Aiders since last January. Nationwide, more than 40,000 people have been trained through a network of 1,800 certified instructors since the program was introduced in the U.S. in 2008.

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based program, which uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select interventions and provide initial help. The training also addresses the risk factors and warning signs of specific illnesses like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and substance use disorders. Participants in the class will receive a booklet on Mental Health First Aid and a certificate naming them a mental health first aider.

The classes will be held at the Verde Valley Guidance Clinic’s Cottonwood location, 8 E. Cottonwood St. Space is limited so advance registration is required. Contact Sharon Stingerie at 634-2236 to register.
